Client Case: Sobae Cosmetic – Beauty and product photoshoot
Overview
Sobae is a cosmetic brand, focus on cleanser and cream. They want to introduce 4 products to new audiences through product and beauty photos.
We need to create a beauty and product photoshoot, with a series of beauty photos and product photos.
Approach
Our creative director proposes a minimal yet elegant feeling for this photoshoot. He wants to focus on product and beauty only, with no distraction from set design. After all, we decide to do a clean look on a white background.
Challanges
Every photogaphers who shoot cosmetic products know that the main challenge lies in the package. Shiny details take a lot of time to get right. We have to calculate for lighting angle and diffusion size, which need more preparation and adjustment than people think.
Beauty photos is another challenge. Beauty photography have to show the glow on skin, a sign of healthy and smooth skin. To capture that glow, we need to set the lighting right and a great makeup artist. Our makeup artist did a great job in this photoshoot, with a perfect makeup layer. Don’t underestimate makeup, or you’ll pay great price later in post production.
When shooting beauty photos with model holding product, usually we will opt for shooting separate elements then doing composite later. But in this photoshoot, deadline is tight, so we need to refine it into single shoot. No time for messing in post.
Execution
We setup the space with big diffusion all around the model and products, trying to cover as many lighting angles as possible. Basically, this is a giant light tent, with more controls for our photographer.
Lighting set is a mix of soft and hard light. Soft light is for overall ambient and shadow control. Hard light is for texture. We add light carefully, one by one until we get it right. Adding too much would make lighting become flat, something our creative director doesn’t want at all.
We setup two different layout for product photography, with each product alone, and a mix of them together. Set up is minimal, so we can focus on product only.
Final
Our photographer did a great job capturing both beauty and product photos, and client is happy to see the photos in the end. And we’re happy to see final photos run on client social media. It was a team effort to making this project come to life. We thank everyone involve in this project.
